The Role of the Individual
TLE FOUNDATIONS — ARTICLE 17 OF 17
Within Total Life Energy™, the individual is ultimately responsible for understanding, protecting, and cultivating their own Life Energy. Practitioners, teachers, books, and other resources can provide knowledge and support, but lasting health depends on how each person understands their body and applies the principles of Total Life Energy in everyday life.
Introduction
We have now reached the final article in the TLE Foundations series.
The first sixteen articles have gradually built an understanding of:
- Nature and the universe;
- Life Energy;
- health;
- healing;
- the natural rules of life;
- the human body;
- individual differences;
- daily life;
- the Three Principles;
- Life Energy Diet™;
- Life Energy Exercise™;
- Life Energy Living™;
- healing;
- prevention and longevity;
- Medical Qigong;
- and the role of the practitioner.
All of this knowledge leads to one final question:
Who is ultimately responsible for our health?
The answer is:
We are.
A practitioner can guide us.
A teacher can teach us.
A book can give us knowledge.
A practice can help us.
But nobody else can live our life for us.
Nobody else can eat for our body.
Nobody else can sleep for us.
Nobody else can practice for us.
Nobody else can make our daily choices for us.
Our health is ultimately lived through our own body and our own life.
Health Belongs to the Individual
Total Life Energy begins with a simple principle:
Health Is Life Energy in Abundance.
Our Life Energy belongs to our own body.
Therefore, understanding and caring for that Life Energy must eventually become our own responsibility.
This does not mean that we have to do everything alone.
It means that we should not permanently give responsibility for our health to someone else.
We can seek help.
We can learn.
We can receive treatment or specialized support when appropriate.
But we remain the person who lives with the results every day.
We Live Inside Our Own Body
No one knows our daily experience as intimately as we do.
We feel when:
- we are energetic;
- we are tired;
- our digestion changes;
- our sleep changes;
- our body feels strong;
- our body feels weak;
- our emotions change;
- our weight changes;
- or something does not feel right.
These experiences are valuable information.
The problem is that most people are never taught how to observe and understand this information.
Total Life Energy teaches us to become more aware of our own body.
Know Your Body
One of the three practical pillars of Total Life Energy is:
Know Your Body.
This does not mean simply knowing our height, weight, age, or medical history.
It means developing an understanding of:
- our strengths;
- our weaknesses;
- our energy level;
- our digestion;
- our sleep;
- our activity capacity;
- our emotional condition;
- our responses to food;
- our responses to exercise;
- and how our body changes under different circumstances.
The body is continually giving us information.
We need to learn how to listen.
Know Your Food
The second practical pillar is:
Know Your Food.
Food is not simply something we consume because it tastes good or because someone tells us it is “healthy.”
Our body must use Life Energy to process food.
Even foods that provide useful energy may not be beneficial if the body must spend more Life Energy processing them than the body can appropriately gain or sustain from them.
Therefore, we need to ask:
Is my way of eating giving my body what it needs without unnecessarily draining its Life Energy?
This requires understanding both:
the food
and
the individual body receiving it.
Know Your Daily Ritual
The third practical pillar is:
Know Your Daily Ritual.
Health is not determined only by what we eat or what exercise we perform.
Our entire daily life affects Life Energy.
This includes:
- when we sleep;
- when we wake;
- how we work;
- how we rest;
- how much we move;
- how we respond to stress;
- how we interact with others;
- how we spend our attention;
- and how we live within our environment.
Our daily life continually either supports or consumes Life Energy.
Therefore, we need to understand our own daily rhythm.
The Individual Must Apply the Three Foundations
The Three Foundations of Total Life Energy are:
Life Energy Diet™
Know Your Food.
Life Energy Exercise™
Know Your Practice.
Life Energy Living™
Know Your Daily Ritual.
But all three require one thing first:
Know Your Body.
Knowing the body is not limited to Life Energy Exercise.
Before eating, we need to understand our body.
Before exercising, we need to understand our body.
Before changing a daily activity, we need to understand our body.
Before continuing a practice, we need to observe how our body responds.
Therefore, Know Your Body is the foundation for applying all three pillars.
Build Life Energy
The first of the Three Principles is:
Build Life Energy.
The individual must learn what builds Life Energy for their own body.
This may involve:
- appropriate food;
- appropriate exercise;
- sufficient rest;
- appropriate sleep;
- healthy daily activities;
- emotional balance;
- and living in harmony with natural principles.
But building Life Energy is not simply about adding more.
The body has specific needs.
What builds one person’s Life Energy may not be appropriate for another person under different circumstances.
Therefore, we must learn to observe and adjust.
Free the Flow of Life Energy
The second principle is:
Free the Flow.
Life Energy needs to move appropriately throughout the body.
The individual therefore needs to understand practices and daily activities that support healthy flow.
This is one reason Life Energy Exercise™ is important.
It is also why daily living matters.
A person can consume appropriate food but still have poor health if their daily life continually interferes with the body’s natural functions and flow.
Health requires both sufficient Life Energy and appropriate movement of that energy.
Sustain Both
The third principle is:
Sustain Both.
Building Life Energy and freeing its flow are not enough if we continually lose more Life Energy than we can restore.
Every day we spend Life Energy.
We spend it:
- moving;
- thinking;
- working;
- digesting;
- exercising;
- responding to our environment;
- and living our lives.
Therefore, lasting health requires learning how to maintain an appropriate balance.
The goal is to create a way of life that can be sustained for years—not something that works for a few weeks and then becomes impossible to continue.
The Individual Must Learn to Adjust
Life does not remain exactly the same.
Our bodies change.
Our age changes.
The seasons change.
Our environment changes.
Our work changes.
Our activity changes.
Our health conditions change.
Our energy needs change.
Therefore, what is appropriate today may not be appropriate forever.
The individual needs to learn how to adjust:
- diet;
- exercise;
- sleep;
- daily activities;
- rest;
- and other aspects of life.
This is why Total Life Energy is a system of principles, not simply a fixed list of instructions.
Listen to the Body Without Becoming Controlled by Symptoms
Listening to the body does not mean following every temporary sensation without understanding it.
The body must be understood within the larger picture.
A temporary feeling may have many possible causes.
Therefore, the individual should learn to observe:
What changed?
What happened before the change?
How did my body respond?
Is this a temporary reaction or a continuing pattern?
Is my Life Energy increasing or decreasing?
Is this practice helping or draining me?
Observation creates understanding.
The Individual Becomes a Student of the Body
One of the greatest goals of Total Life Energy education is to transform a person into a student of their own body.
Instead of constantly asking:
“What should I do?”
the individual gradually learns to ask:
“What does my body need?”
Instead of:
“What is the newest health trend?”
they learn to ask:
“Does this follow the natural principles that support my body?”
Instead of:
“What worked for someone else?”
they ask:
“Is this appropriate for my body under my current circumstances?”
This is the beginning of true self-care.
Self-Care Is Not Selfish
Taking responsibility for our health is not selfish.
Our body is the foundation through which we experience our entire life.
When our health is strong, we have more ability to:
- work;
- think;
- care for others;
- contribute;
- enjoy life;
- and fulfill our responsibilities.
Taking care of ourselves therefore allows us to participate more fully in life.
Self-Care Does Not Mean Doing Everything Alone
Taking responsibility for our health does not mean refusing help.
There are times when we need:
- teachers;
- practitioners;
- doctors;
- specialists;
- family;
- community;
- or other forms of support.
The important distinction is between:
receiving help
and
giving away responsibility.
We can receive help while remaining responsible for our own decisions and long-term health.
When to Seek Professional Help
Self-care should never be interpreted as ignoring serious health problems.
When symptoms are severe, unusual, persistent, rapidly worsening, or potentially dangerous, appropriate professional medical evaluation is important.
Total Life Energy’s emphasis on self-healing and natural living does not mean that people should avoid qualified medical care when it is needed.
The individual remains responsible for making informed decisions about when and where to seek help.
A mature approach to health can include both:
self-care
and
appropriate professional care.
The Individual Must Take Responsibility for Daily Choices
Nobody else controls most of our daily health decisions.
Every day we make choices about:
- what we eat;
- when we sleep;
- when we wake;
- how we move;
- how much we rest;
- how we spend our time;
- what environments we remain in;
- and how we respond to life’s circumstances.
One choice may seem insignificant.
But repeated every day, choices become habits.
Habits shape daily life.
Daily life shapes Life Energy.
And Life Energy shapes health.
Health Is Built Through Repetition
Long-term health rarely comes from one extraordinary action.
It is built through repeated ordinary actions.
A healthy meal once is not a healthy diet.
One exercise session is not a healthy practice.
One good night’s sleep does not restore years of poor sleep.
One day of relaxation does not eliminate years of excessive stress.
What matters is what we repeatedly do.
Therefore:
Health is built through daily practice.
The Individual Must Protect Life Energy
Life Energy is precious.
It is the energy that allows us to live and perform the activities of life.
Therefore, we should not only ask:
How can I get more energy?
We should also ask:
How can I stop unnecessarily wasting the Life Energy I already have?
This changes the way we think about health.
Instead of constantly searching for something new to add, we also learn to identify what is unnecessarily taking from us.
Every Foundation Should Support Life Energy
This principle applies to all three foundations.
Life Energy Diet™
Food should provide what the body needs without unnecessarily draining Life Energy.
Life Energy Exercise™
Exercise should build and free Life Energy without unnecessarily exhausting the body.
Life Energy Living™
Daily life should support natural rhythms rather than continually consuming more Life Energy than the body can sustain.
Together, they create a sustainable way of life.
The Individual Is the One Who Must Practice
A practitioner can teach us how to practice.
But the practitioner cannot practice for us.
A teacher can explain Life Energy.
But the teacher cannot cultivate our Life Energy for us.
A book can explain natural principles.
But the book cannot make our daily choices.
The individual must ultimately take what they have learned and put it into practice.
This is where knowledge becomes transformation.
Learning Once. Benefits for Life.
This is the educational promise of Total Life Energy:
Learning Once. Benefits for Life.
The purpose of learning is not to create another lifelong dependence.
It is to gain knowledge that can continue to serve us throughout life.
Once we understand:
- how our body works;
- what our body needs;
- how food affects us;
- how exercise affects us;
- how daily life affects us;
- and how to observe and adjust;
we can continue applying these principles as circumstances change.
The Individual Becomes More Independent
True health education should gradually increase independence.
The progression is:
Someone tells me what to do.
↓
I learn why.
↓
I understand my body.
↓
I practice.
↓
I observe the results.
↓
I adjust.
↓
I understand what works for my body.
↓
I become capable of caring for myself.
This is the transformation Total Life Energy seeks to create.
Self-Healing Is a Capacity, Not a Promise of Instant Cure
Every living body has some ability to regulate, adapt, repair, and heal.
Total Life Energy seeks to support that natural capacity.
But self-healing should not be understood as a guarantee that every condition will immediately disappear or that professional care is never necessary.
The deeper principle is:
Give the body the conditions it needs to function, regulate, and heal as well as it can.
The individual plays the central role in creating those conditions through daily life.
The Individual and the Practitioner Work Together
The previous article explained the practitioner’s role.
- guides;
- teaches;
- observes;
- provides specialized support;
- and helps the individual understand.
The individual:
- learns;
- practices;
- observes;
- adjusts;
- makes choices;
- and lives the principles.
Neither role should replace the other.
The relationship works best when the practitioner helps the individual become increasingly capable.
The Individual and Medical Qigong
Medical Qigong may provide specialized support when appropriate.
But the individual still has an important role.
The person must:
- understand the practice;
- observe their body’s response;
- practice appropriately;
- communicate changes;
- and incorporate what they learn into daily life.
The ultimate goal is not simply to receive Medical Qigong.
It is to understand how to better care for the body.
The Individual Lives in Nature
The individual is not separate from nature.
We live according to:
- day and night;
- seasons;
- weather;
- food availability;
- environmental conditions;
- and natural rhythms.
The more closely our lives correspond to natural principles, the more easily the body can function according to its own nature.
This is why Total Life Energy begins with understanding the universe and nature.
We cannot fully understand our own health without understanding the larger world in which our body exists.
The Individual Also Lives in Society
Following nature does not mean abandoning society.
We still have:
- work;
- family;
- responsibilities;
- relationships;
- communities;
- and social obligations.
The challenge is to live well within society while protecting the body’s Life Energy.
This requires wisdom rather than rigid rules.
We learn how to adapt without unnecessarily sacrificing our health.
Health Is a Personal Journey
There is no need to compare our health journey with someone else’s.
Another person’s:
- diet;
- exercise;
- sleep schedule;
- body;
- energy level;
- environment;
- or health condition
may be completely different from ours.
The goal is not to become someone else.
The goal is to understand our own body and live appropriately within our own circumstances.
The Individual Must Become the Keeper of Life Energy
The deeper meaning of self-care is not simply taking care of symptoms.
It is becoming the keeper of our own Life Energy.
We learn:
What builds it.
What frees it.
What sustains it.
What drains it.
What our body needs.
When to adjust.
When to rest.
When to seek help.
This knowledge becomes part of us.
The Ultimate Responsibility
Ultimately, no one else can guarantee our health.
A practitioner cannot.
A book cannot.
A diet cannot.
An exercise cannot.
A supplement cannot.
A treatment cannot.
They can all provide support.
But health is lived every day through our own body and our own choices.
Therefore:
The individual is ultimately responsible for applying the knowledge that supports their own Life Energy and health.
This is not a burden.
It is an empowerment.
Your Energy Matters. Your Healing Matters.
Total Life Energy is built on the belief that every person’s Life Energy matters.
Your body matters.
Your health matters.
Your daily choices matter.
Your healing matters.
You do not have to know everything today.
You do not have to change everything at once.
The journey begins with understanding.
Then practice.
Then observation.
Then adjustment.
And eventually, the knowledge becomes part of daily life.

This is where knowledge becomes life.
From Knowledge to Practice
Understanding the principles is the beginning.
But the purpose of understanding is application.
Total Life Energy therefore does not ask people simply to memorize information.
It asks them to learn how to:
Know Your Body.
Know Your Food.
Know Your Daily Ritual.
Then:
Build Life Energy.
Free Its Flow.
Sustain Both.
And apply these principles throughout everyday life.
The TLE Foundations Are Only the Beginning
The seventeen foundational articles provide the conceptual foundation.
But a foundation is not a finished house.
The next step is to take what has been learned and apply it.
That means learning how to:
- understand your own body;
- make appropriate food choices;
- practice Life Energy Exercise;
- develop healthy daily rituals;
- recognize changes in your condition;
- adjust according to your needs;
- and build sustainable habits.
The foundational knowledge provides the why.
Practice provides the how.
The Complete TLE Philosophy
Everything we have explored can ultimately be brought back to a few simple principles.
Health Is Life Energy in Abundance.
Build. Free. Sustain Life Energy.
Know Your Body. Know Your Food. Know Your Daily Ritual.
Live According to Natural Principles.
Learn to Care for Yourself.
Preserve Your Life Energy for the Long Term.
And above all:
Learning Once. Benefits for Life.
The Journey Continues
The TLE Foundations series ends here.
But your health journey does not.
The seventeen foundational articles have provided a framework for understanding Total Life Energy—from the larger world of Nature and Life Energy to the individual body, health, healing, and the way we live each day.
From here, the journey moves from understanding to application.
You can continue exploring how Total Life Energy applies its principles to:
- self-health;
- healing;
- food;
- exercise;
- daily living;
- seasonal changes;
- longevity;
- and specific health challenges.
The goal is not simply to know more about health.
The goal is to live with more Life Energy.
The TLE Foundations Are Only the Beginning
The seventeen foundational articles provide the conceptual foundation.
But a foundation is not a finished house.
The next step is to take what has been learned and apply it to your own life.
That means learning how to:
- understand your own body;
- make appropriate food choices;
- practice Life Energy Exercise;
- develop healthy daily rituals;
- recognize changes in your condition;
- adjust according to your needs;
- and build sustainable habits.
The foundational knowledge provides the why.
Practice provides the how.
And continued observation helps you understand whether what you are doing is truly supporting your body.
What Comes After the TLE Foundations?
The first step after completing these foundations is to go deeper through the book Total Life Energy Plan.
The seventeen articles introduce the fundamental ideas behind Total Life Energy.
The book develops those principles much further.
It begins with the larger world—the universe, Nature, and the principles that govern life.
Then it brings those principles into our smaller individual world:
Nature → Life Energy → Human Body → Individual Body → Food → Daily Life → Health
Through this process, you learn not simply what to do, but how to understand why your body needs what it needs.
From Understanding Nature to Understanding Yourself
The book helps you continue the journey:
1. Understand the Universe and Nature
Learn the fundamental principles of Nature and the universe and how they relate to life.
2. Understand Your Body
Apply those principles to your own body and learn to recognize your body’s unique needs, strengths, weaknesses, and changing conditions.
Know Your Body.
3. Understand Your Food
Learn to look at food from the perspective of what your individual body needs—not simply from general dietary rules or popular ideas about what is “healthy.”
Know Your Food.
4. Understand Your Daily Life
As your understanding develops, you can begin to determine how your daily activities should support your body’s Life Energy.
Know Your Daily Ritual.
5. Create Your Own Self-Health System
The ultimate goal is not to follow someone else’s health routine forever.
It is to learn the principles well enough to create and continually adjust your own way of caring for your body.
Your body changes.
Your circumstances change.
Your environment changes.
Your age changes.
Your needs change.
Therefore, your self-health system must be capable of changing with you.

Create Your Own Sustainable Self-Health System
This is how knowledge becomes a way of life.
And this is why the TLE educational promise is:
Learning Once. Benefits for Life.
The goal is not to create lifelong dependence on a practitioner, a program, a product, or a particular set of instructions.
The goal is to give you knowledge that you can continue to use throughout your life.
Your First Step After TLE Foundations
If you have completed the seventeen TLE Foundations articles and want to continue learning, the recommended next step is:
Read Total Life Energy Plan
TThe seventeen Foundations introduce the basic principles of Total Life Energy and show how our understanding can move from the universe and Nature into the human body, health, healing, and everyday life.
The book takes this understanding much deeper.
It helps you move from:
Understanding the principles of the universe and Nature
↓
Applying them to YOUR body
↓
Applying them to YOUR food
↓
Applying them to YOUR daily life
↓
Creating YOUR own self-health system
The seventeen articles give you the foundation and the map.
The book provides a deeper understanding of the principles and how they can be applied to your own life.
And from there, your own practice, observation, and experience help you make those principles part of the way you live.
Your Health Is Your Responsibility
No one else can live your life for you.
No one else can make every daily choice for you.
No one else can completely understand your body’s condition from the inside as you can learn to understand it yourself.
But taking responsibility for your health does not mean that you have to do everything alone.
Knowledge, guidance, appropriate professional support, and your own experience can all have an important place in the journey.
The goal is to become an active participant in your own health.
Learn.
Understand.
Practice.
Observe.
Adjust.
And gradually become more capable of understanding and caring for your own body and Life Energy.
That is the role of the individual.
That is the heart of self-care.
And that is where the principles of Total Life Energy™ can begin to become a way of life.
