Life Energy Exercise™ — Know Your Practice
TLE FOUNDATIONS · ARTICLE 11 OF 17
Life Energy Exercise™ is the Total Life Energy™ approach to movement, bodywork, and energy practice that helps the entire body Build Life Energy, Free Its Flow, and Sustain Both. Its practices support the healthy functioning and coordination of every part of the body while helping us achieve lasting, optimal health with the least unnecessary expenditure of Life Energy.
Introduction
Exercise is commonly understood as something we do to make the body stronger, fitter, or more active.
But from the perspective of Total Life Energy™, there is a more fundamental question:
What does this practice do to my Life Energy?
The body is a whole.
Every part of the body needs to function properly on its own, while also working together with every other part. Long-term, optimal health cannot be achieved when one part is strong but another part is neglected, or when individual parts function without proper coordination with the whole.
Therefore, Life Energy Exercise™ is designed for the entire body and for the balance and coordination among all parts of the body.
Its purpose is not simply to make us exercise more.
It is to help the whole body function well while using Life Energy wisely.
Here is the updated wording I recommend:
What Is Life Energy Exercise™?
Life Energy Exercise™ is the Total Life Energy™ approach to movement, bodywork, and energy practices that helps the entire body:
- Build Life Energy
- Free the Flow of Life Energy
- Sustain Both
Its purpose is to help every part of the body function properly, both individually and in coordination with the whole body, while using Life Energy wisely.
Life Energy Exercise™ has a broader meaning than exercise in the usual sense.
It includes practices that work with the body and its Life Energy in different ways, including:
- Standing Meditation
- Longevity Qigong
- Steelman Qigong
- Massage
- Cupping
- Guasha
- and other appropriate body and energy practices
These practices may work differently, but they share the same fundamental purpose: supporting the body’s Life Energy and its ability to function naturally and maintain health.
Some practices primarily involve the individual actively practicing with the body. Others may involve a practitioner working with the body from the outside.
Therefore, Life Energy Exercise™ is not limited to physical exercise or movement.
It is a broader approach to working with the body, its functions, and its Life Energy.
Every Part of the Body Matters
The human body is an interconnected whole.
Every part has its own functions, but no part exists completely independently.
For the body to remain healthy:
- each part needs to function properly;
- Life Energy needs to reach the parts that need it;
- different parts need to work together appropriately;
- the body needs to maintain balance and coordination as a whole.
Therefore, Life Energy Exercise does not focus only on one muscle, one organ, or one physical ability.
The practices are designed to work with the whole body.
This whole-body approach is important because long-term health depends not only on whether individual parts are functioning, but also on whether they are functioning together.
Exercise Uses Life Energy
Every movement requires Life Energy.
Walking requires Life Energy.
Working requires Life Energy.
Running requires Life Energy.
Practicing qigong requires Life Energy.
Even resting and recovering require the body to use Life Energy.
Therefore:
Exercise itself has a cost in Life Energy.
Some practices can help the body develop, gather, or circulate Life Energy in ways that ultimately support health.
Other activities may consume large amounts of Life Energy without providing enough benefit to compensate for what the body has spent.
This is why the question is not simply:
How much energy did I use?
It is:
What did my body gain from the energy it used?
If the Life Energy spent on a practice continually exceeds what the body can restore and sustain, the practice may eventually weaken rather than strengthen the body.
Life Energy Exercise is therefore designed to achieve its benefits at the least expense of Life Energy.
Build, Free, and Sustain Life Energy Through Exercise
The Three Principles apply directly to Life Energy Exercise.
1. Build Life Energy
Exercise can help develop the body’s vitality and capacity.
But building Life Energy is not simply a matter of making the body work harder.
The body needs appropriate stimulation and practice that it can absorb and use.
The goal is to help the body become stronger and more capable without unnecessarily exhausting its reserves.
2. Free the Flow of Life Energy
Life Energy needs to flow.
When its flow is disrupted, the affected part of the body may not function properly.
From the Total Life Energy perspective, many illnesses are associated with improper or disrupted Life Energy flow, even though the problem may initially begin with insufficient Life Energy.
Therefore, helping Life Energy flow properly is an important part of maintaining health and overcoming illness.
Movement and energy practices can help restore and maintain this flow throughout the body.
3. Sustain Both
Building Life Energy and freeing its flow are not enough if we continually waste or deplete the body’s Life Energy.
The body needs to conserve and sustain what it has.
This is especially important because:
When our Life Energy is completely depleted, life is gone.
Therefore, lasting health requires us not only to cultivate Life Energy and keep it flowing, but also to use it wisely.
Build. Free. Sustain.
All three are necessary.
Three Core Qigong Practices Within Life Energy Exercise™
Among the practices included within Life Energy Exercise™, three core Qigong practices have particular roles in the Total Life Energy system:
- Standing Meditation — Static Qigong
- Longevity Qigong — Instinctive Qigong
- Steelman Qigong — Active Qigong
These three practices are central to Life Energy Exercise™, but they are not the entire meaning of Life Energy Exercise™. Other practices, such as massage, cupping, and Guasha, can also be used as appropriate to support the body’s Life Energy.
Standing Meditation — Utilizing the Body’s Inborn Ability
Standing Meditation, as well as the right kind of Lying Down Meditation, is the static form of Life Energy Exercise.
The body remains relatively still while practicing a natural standing position.
Its particular emphasis is on utilizing the body’s inborn ability to absorb and flow Life Energy.
The human body has its own natural abilities for receiving, distributing, and utilizing Life Energy.
Rather than continually forcing the body to produce or spend energy, Standing Meditation allows us to become still and work with these natural abilities.
It provides an opportunity for the body to:
- receive Life Energy naturally;
- allow Life Energy to flow;
- become aware of its internal condition;
- support balance throughout the body;
- conserve unnecessary energy expenditure.
Stillness does not mean inactivity.
It is a different way of practicing with the body’s Life Energy.
Longevity Qigong — Gathering and Conserving Energy
Longevity Qigong is the instinctive form of Life Energy Exercise.
Its primary emphasis is gathering Life Energy inside the body, especially around the body’s energy center, the Dantian.
The Dantian is important in the practice because it serves as a central area for gathering and conserving Life Energy.
Longevity Qigong therefore emphasizes the body’s energy reserves and their conservation.
This is directly connected to longevity.
Life requires Life Energy.
As Life Energy becomes depleted, life itself becomes weaker.
And when our energy is completely depleted, life is gone.
Therefore, one of the keys to a long life is not simply obtaining more energy, but also learning how to conserve and wisely use the body’s energy reserves.
Longevity Qigong is particularly directed toward this purpose.
Steelman Qigong — Freeing the Flow of Life Energy
Steelman Qigong is the active form of Life Energy Exercise.
Its primary emphasis is helping Life Energy flow throughout the body.
From the Total Life Energy perspective, many illnesses are related to disrupted, improper, or stagnant Life Energy flow.
A person may initially develop a problem because the body does not have enough Life Energy. But once the body’s Life Energy becomes insufficient or disrupted, its flow may also become abnormal, contributing to illness.
Steelman Qigong therefore places particular emphasis on restoring and supporting Life Energy flow throughout the body.
Its purpose is not merely to strengthen muscles or increase physical endurance.
It is an energy practice for the whole body and is particularly important within the Total Life Energy approach to preventing and healing illness.
Three Practices, One Body
Although Standing Meditation, Longevity Qigong, and Steelman Qigong have different primary emphases, they should not be viewed as completely separate systems.
They work toward the same goal.
| Practice | Primary Emphasis |
|---|---|
| Standing Meditation | Utilizing the body’s inborn ability to absorb and flow Life Energy |
| Longevity Qigong | Gathering and conserving Life Energy, especially in the Dantian |
| Steelman Qigong | Freeing and supporting the flow of Life Energy throughout the body |
Together, they provide different ways of working with Life Energy.
Receive and flow.
Gather and conserve.
Free and circulate.
All three support the whole body.
Why All Three Are Important
No single aspect of Life Energy is enough by itself.
If we only gather energy but do not allow it to flow properly, the body may not make effective use of it.
If we only focus on movement and flow without conserving energy, we may unnecessarily spend our reserves.
If we only try to receive energy without developing appropriate flow and conservation, the body may not make full use of what it receives.
Therefore, Total Life Energy includes all three approaches.
Together they help the body:
Build Life Energy → Free Its Flow → Sustain Both
This is the same principle that governs the entire Total Life Energy system.
Life Energy Exercise Is Designed for Everyone
Life Energy Exercise is not designed only for athletes, healthy young people, or people who want to improve physical performance.
It is designed as a natural part of everyday life.
The goal is to practice appropriately every day, throughout life.
This does not mean that everyone must practice in exactly the same way or for exactly the same amount of time.
The practices can be adjusted according to the individual’s current condition.
The foundation remains the same:
Practice regularly, but practice according to your body.
Adjust the Practice to Your Condition
Knowing your practice means understanding how to adjust it when necessary.
For example, within the eight Steelman Qigong exercises, a practitioner who has digestive problems may place more emphasis on Exercise 3, according to the guidance appropriate to the practice.
Likewise, if a person is particularly tired on a given day while practicing Longevity Qigong, they may practice less of the first four exercises and more of the last four exercises, according to their condition and the practice guidance.
These adjustments do not mean abandoning the system.
They are part of understanding the body and practicing appropriately.
The principle is:
The practice remains the same, but the emphasis can be adjusted to meet the body’s changing needs.
Know Your Practice
This is why the third pillar is:
Life Energy Exercise™ — Know Your Practice.
Knowing your practice means understanding:
- what the practice is designed to do;
- what your body currently needs;
- how much practice is appropriate;
- which aspects deserve more or less emphasis;
- how your body responds;
- when to adjust the practice;
- how to practice consistently over the long term.
It also means understanding that Know Your Body remains fundamental to every aspect of Total Life Energy.
Before eating, exercising, working, resting, sleeping, or engaging in other activities, we need to understand our body’s current condition and needs.
Know Your Body → Know Your Practice
These two ideas work together.
Know Your Body tells us what is needed.
Know Your Practice tells us how to apply the appropriate exercise practice.
Therefore:
Know Your Body → Choose and Adjust Your Practice → Practice → Observe → Adjust Again
This is an ongoing process.
The body changes.
Its needs change.
Its environment changes.
Its energy changes.
Our practice should be able to change appropriately with it.
The Practice Should Not Drain the Body
A common mistake is to judge an exercise by how tired we feel afterward.
Being exhausted does not necessarily mean we had a successful practice.
In Total Life Energy, the deeper question is:
Has the practice helped my body, or has it simply consumed my Life Energy?
A good practice should ultimately leave the body better able to live.
It should support:
- whole-body function;
- coordination among body parts;
- Life Energy;
- natural flow;
- conservation;
- recovery;
- long-term vitality.
The goal is not exhaustion.
The goal is lasting health.
Exercise and the Whole of Life
Life Energy Exercise cannot be separated from the other two foundations.
Life Energy Diet™
Know Your Food.
Food provides what the body needs, but the body must spend its own Life Energy to process and use food.
Life Energy Exercise™
Know Your Practice.
Exercise uses Life Energy, but appropriate practices can help Build Life Energy, Free Its Flow, and Sustain Both.
Life Energy Living™
Know Your Daily Ritual.
The way we sleep, work, rest, think, feel, interact, and conduct our everyday lives continually affects Life Energy.
All three are necessary.
One cannot continually take Life Energy away from the body while the others attempt to compensate for it.
The three foundations must work together to support the whole person.
The Goal Is Not Exercise. The Goal Is Life.
We do not practice exercise simply for the sake of exercising.
We practice so that we can live.
We need Life Energy to:
- work;
- think;
- learn;
- create;
- care for others;
- enjoy life;
- recover;
- remain active;
- age well;
- fulfill our responsibilities;
- live fully.
Therefore, the ultimate measure of Life Energy Exercise is not how impressive the exercise itself looks.
It is whether the practice helps us maintain the Life Energy necessary for life itself.
Life Energy Exercise Through the Natural Principles
Life Energy Exercise follows the same natural principles introduced throughout the TLE Foundations.
Nature does not waste energy unnecessarily.
The body also should not.
Nature maintains movement and stillness.
The body needs both.
Nature gathers, distributes, uses, and conserves energy.
The body does the same.
Therefore, effective exercise should work with the body’s natural abilities, rather than continually forcing the body against its own needs.
This is why the three forms of Life Energy Exercise have different emphases while working toward the same goal.
A Lifelong Practice
Life Energy Exercise is not meant to be a temporary program that ends when a particular goal is reached.
It is designed for everyday practice throughout life.
The body changes with age.
Seasons change.
Living conditions change.
Health conditions change.
Daily responsibilities change.
Therefore, our practice may need to change as well.
But the fundamental purpose remains:
Use Life Energy wisely. Build it. Free its flow. Sustain both.
This allows exercise to become part of a lifelong approach to health rather than another short-term health trend.
The Deeper Meaning of “Know Your Practice”
Ultimately, Life Energy Exercise teaches us something larger than how to move.
It teaches us to develop a relationship with our own body.
Instead of asking only:
“What exercise should I do?”
we learn to ask:
“What does my body need now?”
“What practice is appropriate for my condition?”
“How can this practice help my whole body function well?”
“Is my Life Energy flowing appropriately?”
“Am I conserving my energy while practicing?”
“How should I adjust the practice as my condition changes?”
These questions turn exercise into a practice of understanding the body.
That is why the principle is:
Know Your Practice.
From Exercise to Daily Living
Life Energy Exercise is one part of a much larger system.
Once we understand how to use movement and energy practices appropriately, another question naturally follows:
What about everything else we do throughout the day?
We eat.
We sleep.
We work.
We rest.
We think.
We feel.
We interact with others.
We respond to our environment.
We follow daily routines.
All of these activities use and affect Life Energy.
So lasting health cannot depend on exercise alone.
We must learn how to organize our entire daily life according to the needs of our body and the natural principles of life.
That brings us to the third foundation:
Life Energy Living™: Know Your Daily Ritual
Key Principle
Life Energy Exercise™ is not about exercising as much as possible. It is about practicing appropriately so that every part of the body can function well individually and together, while Life Energy is built, its flow is freed, and both are sustained at the least unnecessary expense of Life Energy.
Continue TLE Foundations
Food and exercise are important, but neither exists separately from the rest of life.
We eat within a daily routine.
We exercise within a daily routine.
We sleep, work, rest, interact with others, respond to our environment, and carry out countless other activities within that same daily life.
Therefore, protecting Life Energy requires us to look beyond individual practices and understand how we live each day as a whole.
