The Role of Medical Qigong

Understanding Medical Qigong Within Total Life Energy™

TLE FOUNDATIONS · ARTICLE 15 OF 17

Medical Qigong is a specialized application of qigong used to support the body’s Life Energy, particularly when a person’s energy is deficient, disrupted, or unable to function properly. Within Total Life Energy™, Medical Qigong is part of a broader self-healing system in which the individual learns to understand the body, restore Life Energy, and develop the ability to care for their own health.

Introduction

Qigong has been practiced in China for thousands of years as a way of working with the body, Life Energy, movement, stillness, and the natural principles of life.

Within Total Life Energy™, qigong is not viewed as a separate activity added to an otherwise complete health system.

It is part of a larger understanding of how Life Energy supports the body.

The broader concept of Life Energy Exercise includes qigong as well as other practices such as massage, cupping, Guasha, and other methods that can support the body’s Life Energy and its flow.

Among these practices, Medical Qigong has a specialized role.

It can be used when a person’s condition requires more focused support than ordinary daily self-care.

But understanding this role requires understanding an important principle:

Medical Qigong is not the whole of Total Life Energy. It is one specialized tool within a much larger system of understanding and caring for the body.

What Is Qigong?

Qigong is a traditional practice involving the body, movement, stillness, awareness, and Life Energy.

The word is commonly understood as relating to the cultivation or practice of energy.

From the Total Life Energy perspective, qigong practices can help us work with Life Energy in different ways.

Different exercises may emphasize:

  • gathering Life Energy;
  • conserving Life Energy;
  • freeing its flow;
  • balancing different parts of the body;
  • strengthening the body’s functions;
  • or utilizing the body’s natural ability to receive and move energy.

Therefore, qigong is not one single exercise.

Different practices can have different purposes.

What Is Medical Qigong?

Medical Qigong is the use of qigong principles and practices with a specific focus on health and healing.

Instead of practicing only for general wellness, Medical Qigong is applied according to a person’s particular bodily condition.

The practitioner considers the person’s individual needs and determines what kind of support may be appropriate.

This makes Medical Qigong different from simply performing a standard exercise routine.

The objective is not merely to move the body.

The objective is to help address problems involving the body’s Life Energy and its functioning.

Why Is Medical Qigong Needed?

A person who is generally healthy may be able to maintain health through appropriate daily habits, food, exercise, sleep, and other forms of self-care.

But when the body becomes significantly weakened or its Life Energy becomes severely deficient or disrupted, additional support may be needed.

This is where Medical Qigong may have a role.

It can provide more focused attention to the body’s condition.

The purpose is to help the body regain the conditions needed for healing and healthy function.

The Body Is a Whole

One of the important principles of Total Life Energy is that the body cannot be understood as a collection of unrelated parts.

Every part of the body needs to function properly.

At the same time, the parts need to function together.

The health of one part affects the rest of the body.

Therefore, qigong exercises are designed to work with the body as a whole.

Even when an exercise appears to focus on a particular area, its purpose is not necessarily limited to that area.

The deeper objective is to support:

  • the individual parts;
  • the relationships among the parts;
  • the whole body’s Life Energy;
  • and the balance and coordination of bodily functions.

This whole-body perspective is essential for lasting health.

Three Qigong Practices Within Total Life Energy

Total Life Energy includes three major qigong practices:

Standing Meditation

Longevity Qigong

Steelman Qigong

Each has a different emphasis.

They are not competing systems.

They work together.

Standing Meditation

Standing Meditation is a form of static qigong.

Its emphasis is on utilizing the body’s inborn ability to absorb and flow Life Energy.

Rather than relying primarily on vigorous movement, the practice allows the body to become still and receptive.

The body can then work with its own natural abilities.

Standing Meditation therefore emphasizes:

  • stillness;
  • receptivity;
  • natural energy movement;
  • whole-body awareness;
  • and the body’s inborn capacity to work with Life Energy.

It is not simply “standing still.”

It is a practice of allowing the body to work with its own Life Energy.

Longevity Qigong

Longevity Qigong consists of eight exercises designed primarily to gather and conserve Life Energy within the body.

A particular emphasis is placed on the body’s energy center, the Dantian.

The Dantian is traditionally regarded as an important center for storing and cultivating energy.

Longevity Qigong therefore emphasizes the conservation of energy reserves.

This connects directly with the principle of longevity:

Life continues as long as the body has the Life Energy necessary to sustain it.

When energy reserves are continually depleted without adequate restoration, long-term health can suffer.

Longevity Qigong therefore helps develop the ability to cultivate and conserve Life Energy rather than continually spending it.

Steelman Qigong

Steelman Qigong is primarily focused on the movement and flow of Life Energy throughout the body.

From the Total Life Energy perspective, many illnesses are associated with disrupted or staggered energy flow, although a problem may initially develop because the body lacks sufficient Life Energy.

Steelman Qigong therefore emphasizes freeing Life Energy so that it can move appropriately throughout the body.

This is particularly important when the body has areas that are weak, blocked, or not functioning harmoniously with the rest of the body.

Steelman Qigong is designed to work with the entire body while also allowing particular exercises to provide greater attention to areas that need support.

The Three Practices Have Different Emphases

The three practices can therefore be understood simply:

PracticePrimary Emphasis
Standing MeditationUtilizing the body’s inborn ability to absorb and flow Life Energy
Longevity QigongGathering and conserving Life Energy, especially in the Dantian
Steelman QigongFreeing and restoring the flow of Life Energy

But these descriptions should not be interpreted too narrowly.

Each practice works with the entire body.

Each is intended to support the relationship among different parts of the body and the body’s overall health.

All Three Support the Same Goal

Although the practices have different emphases, their ultimate purpose is the same:

Build Life Energy. Free Its Flow. Sustain Both.

Longevity Qigong may emphasize gathering and conserving.

Steelman Qigong may emphasize flow.

Standing Meditation may emphasize the body’s natural ability to receive and move energy.

But all three ultimately support lasting health.

And all three are designed with the principle of achieving health at the least unnecessary expense of Life Energy.

Life Energy Exercise Is Broader Than Qigong

Life Energy Exercise™ has a broader meaning than qigong alone.

It includes the three primary qigong practices as well as other practices that can support the body and its Life Energy, including:

  • massage;
  • cupping;
  • Guasha;
  • and other appropriate Life Energy practices.

These methods may have different applications.

Some may be appropriate for everyday self-care.

Others may be more appropriate when a person needs specialized support.

The common principle is that the practice should support the body’s Life Energy rather than unnecessarily drain it.

Every Practice Must Consider the Individual Body

There is no single practice that should be applied blindly to every person in exactly the same way.

The general principles remain the same.

But the application may vary according to:

  • the person’s current condition;
  • energy level;
  • weaknesses;
  • age;
  • daily activities;
  • environment;
  • season;
  • and other circumstances.

For example, someone experiencing digestive problems may place greater emphasis on Exercise 3 of the Steelman Qigong set.

Someone who is particularly tired on a given day may reduce the first four exercises of the Longevity Qigong practice and emphasize the latter four according to their condition.

These adjustments do not mean abandoning the principles.

They mean applying the principles to the individual body.

Why Whole-Body Practice Matters

The body functions as an interconnected whole.

Every part needs to function well individually.

But individual function is not enough.

The parts must also coordinate with one another.

Therefore, long-term optimal health requires both:

Healthy individual parts

and

Healthy coordination among the parts.

Life Energy Exercise is designed around this understanding.

The objective is not simply to make one part stronger.

It is to help the whole body function more appropriately.

Medical Qigong and the Three Principles

Medical Qigong can be understood through the Three Principles of Total Life Energy.

Build Life Energy

When the body lacks sufficient Life Energy, appropriate qigong practices may help cultivate and strengthen it.

Free the Flow

When Life Energy is not flowing appropriately, specific practices may help restore healthier movement and coordination.

Sustain Both

Healing should not depend on continually receiving outside intervention.

The ultimate goal is to help the individual develop a sustainable way to maintain their Life Energy and health.

Medical Qigong Is Not Simply More Exercise

Ordinary exercise often emphasizes:

  • strength;
  • endurance;
  • flexibility;
  • cardiovascular activity;
  • or physical performance.

These can all have value.

But Medical Qigong has a different emphasis.

It is concerned with the relationship between:

  • the body;
  • Life Energy;
  • energy flow;
  • bodily function;
  • and the individual’s condition.

Therefore, the goal is not necessarily to exercise harder.

The goal is to practice appropriately.

More Is Not Always Better

This principle is particularly important in Life Energy Exercise.

Because exercise itself requires Life Energy, excessive practice can potentially take more from the body than the body can sustain.

Therefore:

The best practice is not necessarily the most practice. It is the practice that appropriately supports the body.

This is why Total Life Energy emphasizes individual adjustment.

A person may practice every day while changing the amount or emphasis according to their condition.

Medical Qigong and Healing

Medical Qigong may be particularly useful when a person has health problems that require focused attention.

The practice may help address conditions involving:

  • weakness;
  • deficient Life Energy;
  • disrupted energy flow;
  • poor coordination among bodily functions;
  • or other imbalances identified through the TLE framework.

But Medical Qigong should not be understood as a magic technique that bypasses the body’s natural processes.

The body still needs to heal.

The practice is intended to support the conditions under which the body can heal.

Medical Qigong Does Not Replace the Foundations of Daily Health

Even when Medical Qigong is appropriate, it does not eliminate the importance of:

  • appropriate food;
  • appropriate exercise;
  • adequate sleep;
  • appropriate daily activities;
  • emotional well-being;
  • and living according to natural principles.

This is why Medical Qigong exists within Total Life Energy rather than outside it.

A person may receive specialized help while also learning how to care for their own body.

The Practitioner Has a Specialized Role

Medical Qigong may involve a practitioner who has the knowledge and experience to recognize an individual’s needs and provide appropriate support.

The practitioner may help identify:

  • where Life Energy is deficient;
  • where its flow is disrupted;
  • what areas need attention;
  • and which practices may be appropriate.

But the practitioner should not become the permanent owner of the individual’s health.

This distinction is extremely important within Total Life Energy.

The Goal Is Greater Self-Care

The purpose of receiving specialized help should ultimately be to improve the individual’s ability to understand and care for their own body.

A person should gradually learn:

  • what their body needs;
  • what weakens them;
  • what strengthens them;
  • what practices are appropriate;
  • when to rest;
  • when to adjust;
  • and how to maintain their health.

Therefore:

Medical Qigong may provide specialized support, but self-care provides the foundation for lifelong health.

Medical Qigong Within the Larger TLE System

Total Life Energy is much larger than Medical Qigong.

The complete framework includes:

Understanding Nature

Understanding Life Energy

Understanding the Body

Understanding Health and Healing

Build Life Energy

Free Its Flow

Sustain Both

Life Energy Diet™

Life Energy Exercise™

Life Energy Living™

Prevention and Longevity

Specialized practices such as Medical Qigong when appropriate

Medical Qigong therefore belongs within the system rather than replacing the system.

The Difference Between Self-Practice and Medical Qigong

There are two related but different applications of Life Energy Exercise.

Daily Life Energy Exercise

Designed for everyone and everyday practice.

The individual learns and practices appropriate exercises to maintain health and cultivate Life Energy.

Medical Qigong

More specialized and condition-focused.

It may be used when an individual has significant health problems or needs additional support beyond ordinary daily practice.

The two can complement each other.

Medical Qigong and Long-Term Health

The ultimate goal is not to depend on Medical Qigong forever.

The deeper goal is to restore or strengthen the body’s ability to maintain itself.

This is consistent with the larger TLE philosophy:

Learning Once. Benefits for Life.

When people understand their bodies and learn appropriate practices, they can carry that knowledge into their everyday lives.

A Time-Honored Practice Within a Modern Life

The principles behind qigong developed within traditional Chinese culture, particularly within the traditions of Daoism and Chinese medicine.

The value of studying these traditions is not simply to imitate ancient practices.

It is to understand the principles behind them.

Nature.

Energy.

Balance.

Flow.

Conservation.

Adaptation.

The relationship between the individual and the environment.

These principles can then be applied to contemporary life.

The Deeper Purpose of Medical Qigong

Medical Qigong ultimately reflects a larger idea:

The body is not merely a machine that needs to be repaired from outside.

It is a living system with its own Life Energy and its own ability to regulate, adapt, and heal.

When that ability is weakened, the goal is not simply to suppress what the body is expressing.

The goal is to understand what the body needs and support it appropriately.

This is the deeper role of Medical Qigong within Total Life Energy.

Medical Qigong Is a Tool — Not the Destination

It is important not to confuse a method with the ultimate goal.

Qigong is a method.

Medical Qigong is a specialized method.

The goal is health.

And within Total Life Energy:

Health Is Life Energy in Abundance.

Therefore, every method should ultimately be evaluated by one question:

Does this help the body build Life Energy, free its flow, and sustain both without unnecessarily draining the body?

That is the standard.

Key Principle

Medical Qigong is a specialized application of Life Energy Exercise™ that supports the body’s Life Energy and its flow according to an individual’s needs. It can provide focused support during health challenges, while the larger goal of Total Life Energy™ is to help each person understand their body, develop appropriate self-care, and sustain health for life.

From Medical Qigong to the Role of the Practitioner

We have now explored why Medical Qigong has a specialized role within Total Life Energy.

But whenever specialized healing practices are involved, another important question naturally arises:

Who provides the practice, and what should that person’s role be?

A practitioner can provide specialized knowledge, experience, observation, guidance, and support. But the practitioner cannot live another person’s life or take permanent responsibility for another person’s health.

The purpose of guidance should not be to create dependence. It should help the individual understand their own body, recognize their own condition, and become increasingly capable of caring for themselves.

This leads to an important principle within Total Life Energy:

The practitioner has an important role—but the practitioner is not the owner of another person’s health.
