The Healing Process
Understanding How the Body Restores Health
TLE FOUNDATIONS · ARTICLE 13 OF 17
Healing is the body’s process of moving from an unhealthy or imbalanced condition toward a healthier, more balanced state. In Total Life Energy™, healing means identifying what is weakening or disrupting the body’s Life Energy, then supporting the body to Build Life Energy, Free Its Flow, and Sustain Both so it can restore and maintain health.
Introduction
When we become sick, we naturally want the problem to disappear as quickly as possible.
We want the pain to stop.
We want our energy to return.
We want our digestion to improve.
We want to sleep normally again.
We want our body to feel like itself again.
But healing is not simply the disappearance of a symptom.
The body is a living system.
When health has been disturbed, restoring health requires more than addressing what we can see or feel on the surface.
We need to understand why the body became unhealthy in the first place, what is happening to its Life Energy, and what the body needs in order to restore its natural functions.
This is the foundation of the Total Life Energy approach to healing.
What Is Healing?
Healing is the process through which the body moves toward greater health and restores its ability to function appropriately.
From the Total Life Energy perspective, health depends fundamentally on Life Energy.
When Life Energy is abundant and functioning appropriately, the body has the resources it needs to maintain its activities and regulate itself.
When Life Energy becomes insufficient, disrupted, or improperly distributed, the body’s functions can become impaired.
Therefore, healing requires addressing the underlying condition of Life Energy—not simply chasing symptoms.
Healing is not merely making an illness disappear. Healing is helping the body regain the Life Energy and natural functioning needed to maintain health.
Health and Healing Are Connected
The previous foundational articles established an important relationship:
Health is Life Energy in abundance.
When the body has sufficient Life Energy and that energy functions appropriately throughout the body, the body can better perform its normal activities.
When Life Energy declines or its flow becomes disturbed, the body may begin to struggle.
Symptoms and illnesses can then appear.
Healing is the process of helping the body move back toward a healthier condition.
Therefore:
Health → Life Energy in abundance
Illness → Life Energy deficiency, disruption, or imbalance
Healing → restoring the conditions needed for Life Energy and healthy body function
This is why Total Life Energy begins healing from the foundation rather than only from the symptom.
The Body Has Its Own Ability to Heal
The human body is not a passive object.
It is a living system with its own abilities to regulate, adapt, repair, recover, and maintain itself.
We see this principle throughout Nature.
A wound can close.
A broken bone can gradually repair.
The body can recover from exhaustion when given appropriate rest.
The body continuously adjusts to changes in temperature, activity, food, sleep, and environment.
These abilities are part of life itself.
Therefore, healing does not mean forcing the body to become healthy from the outside.
It means supporting the body’s own ability to restore health.
This is a fundamental principle of Total Life Energy.
Why Does the Body Become Sick?
Illness does not necessarily begin with the final symptom we notice.
A person may experience pain, fatigue, digestive problems, sleep problems, weight changes, or another health problem.
But the visible problem may be only the end result of a longer process.
The underlying problem may involve:
- insufficient Life Energy;
- disrupted Life Energy flow;
- inappropriate food;
- excessive energy expenditure;
- inadequate recovery;
- unsuitable daily habits;
- emotional strain;
- environmental conditions;
- inherited or acquired weaknesses;
- or combinations of these factors.
Therefore, healing requires looking deeper.
We need to ask:
What happened to the body’s Life Energy?
and:
Why is the body unable to maintain its normal function?
Deficiency and Disrupted Flow
Two important concepts in the Total Life Energy approach are Life Energy deficiency and disrupted Life Energy flow.
A body may not have enough Life Energy to perform its normal functions.
But insufficient energy is not the only problem.
Even when Life Energy is present, it must also be able to move and function appropriately throughout the body.
Therefore, a person may have:
- insufficient Life Energy;
- disrupted flow of Life Energy;
- both insufficient energy and disrupted flow;
- or other imbalances affecting the body’s ability to use Life Energy properly.
This is why simply trying to “get more energy” does not necessarily solve every health problem.
The body must also be able to receive, move, use, and conserve Life Energy appropriately.
The Healing Process Begins With Understanding
Before we can appropriately support healing, we need to understand the condition of the individual body.
This is why Know Your Body is fundamental to Total Life Energy.
Two people may have the same diagnosis or similar symptoms but have very different underlying conditions.
Their bodies may have different:
- strengths;
- weaknesses;
- Life Energy deficiencies;
- Life Energy flow problems;
- dietary needs;
- exercise needs;
- daily circumstances;
- environmental influences.
Therefore, the same solution may not be equally appropriate for both people.
Healing begins with understanding the individual.
The Individual Body Comes First
Total Life Energy does not begin by asking:
“What disease does this person have?”
It begins by asking:
“What is happening in this person’s body?”
The name of a disease can be useful for communication, but it does not tell us everything about the individual body.
A diagnosis describes a condition according to a particular medical framework.
But the individual body may have its own unique combination of weaknesses and imbalances.
Therefore, Total Life Energy looks at the person rather than treating a disease name as the entire person.
The Three Principles of Healing
The healing process follows the same Three Principles that govern Total Life Energy:
Build Life Energy
The body needs enough Life Energy to perform its functions and support recovery.
Therefore, healing may require identifying what is depleting Life Energy and finding appropriate ways to restore it.
This includes considering:
- food;
- rest;
- appropriate exercise;
- sleep;
- daily activities;
- emotional conditions;
- and other factors affecting energy.
Free the Flow of Life Energy
Life Energy needs to flow appropriately throughout the body.
When flow becomes disrupted, the affected areas may not function properly.
Therefore, healing also involves identifying and addressing problems with Life Energy flow.
This is one of the important roles of Life Energy Exercise™, including the specialized practices within the Total Life Energy system.
Sustain Both
Healing is not complete simply because a person feels better temporarily.
The body needs to maintain its improved condition.
Therefore, we must identify what caused Life Energy to become deficient or disrupted in the first place.
If the same conditions continue to drain the body, the problem may return.
This is why lasting healing requires changes that the body can sustain.
Build. Free. Sustain.
Healing Requires More Than One Solution
Because the body is a whole, healing cannot always be achieved by changing only one part of life.
For example, a person may improve their diet but continue to sleep poorly.
Another person may exercise regularly but continually exhaust themselves through work and inadequate recovery.
Someone else may practice Qigong but continue habits that repeatedly drain Life Energy.
Therefore, healing often requires looking at the whole pattern of life.
This is why Total Life Energy has three foundations:
Life Energy Diet™
Know Your Food.
Life Energy Exercise™
Know Your Practice.
Life Energy Living™
Know Your Daily Ritual.
All three can Build Life Energy, Free Its Flow, and Sustain Both.
The Body Needs the Right Kind of Support
More is not always better.
When a body is weak, simply demanding more from it may create additional depletion.
More exercise may not always be appropriate.
More food may not always be appropriate.
More supplements may not always be appropriate.
More treatments may not always be appropriate.
The body needs the right kind and amount of support for its current condition.
This is why Total Life Energy emphasizes individualization.
The goal is not to force the body.
The goal is to provide what the body actually needs.
Healing Takes Time
The body may become unhealthy gradually.
Therefore, healing may also require time.
A condition that developed over years may not disappear immediately.
The body may need time to:
- restore Life Energy;
- improve its flow;
- rebuild strength;
- recover from long-term depletion;
- adapt to healthier habits;
- regain normal function.
This is especially important when dealing with long-standing health problems.
Healing should therefore be viewed as a process, not merely an event.
Symptoms May Change During Healing
When the body’s condition changes, the way a person feels may also change.
A symptom may improve.
Another symptom may become noticeable.
Energy levels may fluctuate.
The body’s needs may change.
This is why healing requires observation and adjustment.
Rather than blindly continuing the same approach regardless of what happens, we need to:
Observe → Understand → Adjust → Continue
This is part of learning to care for the individual body.
Healing Does Not Mean Fighting the Body
Many people approach illness as if the body itself were the enemy.
They may try to suppress every symptom as quickly as possible.
But a symptom is often the body’s way of showing that something is wrong.
Therefore, instead of simply fighting what the body is communicating, we should learn to understand it.
This does not mean ignoring serious symptoms or refusing appropriate medical care.
It means recognizing that the body itself is an important source of information.
The question becomes:
What is my body trying to tell me?
and:
What does it need in order to restore health?
Healing and Natural Principles
The healing process follows the same principles found throughout Nature.
Nature restores balance.
Nature conserves energy.
Nature adapts to changing conditions.
Nature works through relationships among different parts.
The human body is part of Nature.
Therefore, healing should work with these natural principles rather than continually working against them.
This is one reason Total Life Energy draws upon principles from Daoism and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
These traditions emphasize understanding the relationship between the individual, the body, Nature, and the flow of life.
Healing Is Individual
There is no single healing path that is identical for everyone.
The appropriate path depends on:
- the person’s body;
- current Life Energy;
- energy flow;
- existing weaknesses;
- food;
- exercise;
- daily life;
- environment;
- age;
- season;
- and other circumstances.
Therefore:
The healing principle may be universal, but its application is individual.
This is one of the most important distinctions in Total Life Energy.
The Body Changes During Healing
As health improves, the body’s needs can change.
A person who was previously weak may gradually become stronger.
A person who was severely depleted may eventually have more Life Energy available.
A person whose energy flow was disrupted may need different practices as flow improves.
Diet may need adjustment.
Exercise may need adjustment.
Daily activities may need adjustment.
Therefore, the healing process is not necessarily a straight line in which one plan is followed unchanged from beginning to end.
We must continue to Know Your Body.
Healing and Weight Regulation
The same principle applies to body weight.
Weight is not an isolated problem separate from the rest of the body.
The body has its own ability to regulate its functions, including its weight, when its underlying conditions are appropriately supported.
Therefore, Total Life Energy does not approach weight simply by asking:
“How can I make the number on the scale smaller?”
Instead:
What is preventing the body from regulating its weight appropriately?
This may require examining food, digestion, activity, Life Energy, daily habits, sleep, and other conditions.
The deeper goal is to restore the body’s ability to regulate itself.
Healing and Chronic Conditions
Long-term health problems often require a long-term perspective.
If a person has lived for years in a way that repeatedly drains Life Energy, simply adding one new practice may not be enough.
The underlying pattern may need to change.
This is why Total Life Energy is designed as a complete system rather than a single treatment.
It addresses:
- food;
- exercise;
- daily living;
- emotions;
- mental well-being;
- environment;
- and other aspects of life that influence the body.
The purpose is to help the individual develop a sustainable way of living that supports health over time.
The Role of Self-Care in Healing
Healing should not mean becoming permanently dependent on another person.
Professional help can sometimes be valuable and necessary.
But the individual also needs to understand their own body and learn how to care for it.
This is why Total Life Energy emphasizes self-health education.
The deeper goal is:
Learning once and benefiting for life.
When people understand the principles of their own bodies, they can make better decisions every day.
They can recognize changes earlier.
They can adjust their diet.
They can adjust their practice.
They can adjust their daily life.
They can learn to protect their Life Energy rather than continually waiting until a health problem becomes severe.
Prevention and Healing Are Connected
Healing should not end when symptoms improve.
The next question is:
How can we prevent the same problem from returning?
This is where healing becomes prevention.
If we understand what weakened the body, we can change the conditions that contributed to the problem.
If we understand what restored health, we can continue supporting those conditions.
Therefore:
Healing → Understanding → Prevention → Long-term health
This is one reason Total Life Energy focuses on long-term health rather than temporary symptom relief.
Healing Is a Return to Natural Function
The ultimate goal of healing is not simply to make a person feel better for a short period.
It is to help the body regain the ability to:
- obtain Life Energy;
- use Life Energy;
- move Life Energy;
- conserve Life Energy;
- regulate its functions;
- adapt to its environment;
- recover;
- and maintain health.
In other words:
Healing is helping the body return toward its natural ability to live and function well.
The Healing Process in Simple Terms
The Total Life Energy approach can be summarized as a continuing process:
1. Know Your Body
Understand the body’s condition, strengths, weaknesses, and needs.
2. Identify What Is Draining or Disrupting Life Energy
Look beyond the obvious symptom.
3. Fulfill the Body’s Needs
Provide appropriate food, rest, exercise, daily living, and other support.
4. Build Life Energy
Strengthen the body’s Life Energy.
5. Free Its Flow
Help Life Energy move and function appropriately throughout the body.
6. Sustain Both
Create conditions that allow the body to maintain its improved state.
7. Observe and Adjust
Continue adapting as the body and circumstances change.
This is not a one-time process.
It becomes a way of caring for the body throughout life.
Healing Is Not Separate From Living
We do not heal only when we are sick.
Every day, we either support or weaken the body’s ability to maintain health.
Every meal affects the body.
Every practice affects the body.
Every night’s sleep affects the body.
Every daily activity affects the body.
Every environment affects the body.
Therefore, healing and healthy living are not separate processes.
The same principles that help restore health also help maintain health.
This is why the Three Foundations are so important.
The Role of Medical Qigong
Within Total Life Energy, Qigong can be used not only as everyday exercise but also as part of a more focused approach to healing.
The three core Qigong practices have different emphases:
Standing Meditation supports the body’s inborn ability to absorb and flow Life Energy.
Longevity Qigong emphasizes gathering and conserving Life Energy, particularly in the Dantian.
Steelman Qigong emphasizes freeing Life Energy flow throughout the body and is a specialized practice within the TLE approach to healing.
These practices are part of the broader Life Energy Exercise™ foundation.
Other practices such as massage, cupping, and Guasha can also be used appropriately within the broader Life Energy Exercise approach.
The Healing Process Is a Partnership
Healing is ultimately the work of the living body.
A practitioner, including medical qigong master, cannot simply “give” someone health.
A practitioner may provide knowledge, observation, guidance, or appropriate practices.
But the individual’s body must receive, use, and respond to that support.
The individual therefore has an essential role.
This leads to two important foundational topics that will be explored later:
The Role of the Practitioner
and
The Role of the Individual
Both are important, but neither replaces the body’s own role in healing.
The Deeper Meaning of Healing
The deepest lesson of Total Life Energy is that healing is not merely about fighting disease.
It is about understanding life.
The body is part of Nature.
Life Energy sustains life.
The body continually interacts with its environment.
Health depends on how well the body can obtain, use, move, and conserve Life Energy.
When these processes become disturbed, illness may develop.
When the conditions supporting health are restored, the body can move toward greater health.
Therefore:
Healing begins with understanding.
Healing continues through appropriate action.
Healing becomes lasting when the body can sustain its health.
Key Principle
Healing is not simply the removal of symptoms. It is the process of supporting the individual body so it can Build Life Energy, Free Its Flow, and Sustain Both, restore its natural functions, and maintain health over the long term.
From Healing to Prevention and Longevity
Once we understand how healing works, another question naturally follows:
Wouldn’t it be better to protect the body’s Life Energy before serious illness develops?
Healing is important when health has already been disturbed, but Total Life Energy does not view health only from the perspective of addressing problems after they appear.
A deeper goal is to protect Life Energy, recognize weaknesses early, and maintain health before serious problems develop..
Instead of waiting until the body becomes severely depleted, we can learn to understand our body’s condition, respond to changes, and organize our food, exercise, daily activities, and lifestyle in ways that preserve Life Energy for as long as possible.
This takes us beyond healing.
It leads naturally to prevention and longevity.
