Life Energy Diet™: Know Your Food

TLE FOUNDATIONS · ARTICLE 10 OF 17

Life Energy Diet™ is the Total Life Energy™ approach to understanding food in relation to nature, the individual body, and Life Energy. It teaches us to choose and adjust food according to the body’s needs and circumstances so that eating can help Build Life Energy, Free Its Flow, and Sustain Both.

Food Is More Than Nutrition. It Is Part of Your Life Energy.

What we eat becomes part of the body we live in.

Every day, food enters the body, is transformed, and becomes part of the conditions that support life. For this reason, food is not simply a matter of calories, nutrients, weight, or taste.

From the Total Life Energy™ perspective, food is part of a much larger question:

Does the way we eat support Life Energy—or continually take it away?

This is the foundation of Life Energy Diet™.

Life Energy Diet is not a temporary diet for losing weight. It is not a restrictive eating program, a collection of food rules, or a trend-based menu.

It is a way of understanding food according to the principles of nature, the needs of the individual body, and the requirements of daily life.

Its purpose is to help us:

Build Life Energy. Free Its Flow. Sustain Both.

And just as importantly, it teaches us:

Know Your Food.

Food and Life

All living beings depend on their surroundings.

Plants depend on sunlight, water, soil, air, and other conditions of nature.

Animals obtain energy and nourishment from their environment.

Human beings do the same.

Food is one of the primary ways we receive what we need from the natural world.

But human beings do not all respond to food in exactly the same way.

The food that supports one person may not be appropriate for another person under different circumstances.

The same person may also need different foods, amounts, preparation, or eating patterns at different stages of life or under different living conditions.

Therefore, Life Energy Diet begins with two fundamental ideas:

Food must be understood in the context of nature.

and

Food must be understood in the context of the individual body.

Food Is Part of the Natural World

Before food becomes something on a plate, it comes from nature.

Grains grow from the earth.

Vegetables grow from the soil.

Fruits grow on plants and trees.

Beans, seeds, nuts, roots, and other foods come from living systems.

Animal foods come from animals that themselves depend on nature.

Water comes from the natural environment.

Understanding food therefore begins with understanding nature.

This follows the path established throughout the TLE Foundations series:

Understand the universe.

Understand nature.

Understand the human body in nature.

Understand your individual body.

Understand your food.

This is why Know Your Food follows Know Your Body.

Food Is Not Just a List of Nutrients

Modern discussions about food often focus heavily on individual components.

We may hear about:

  • calories
  • protein
  • carbohydrates
  • fats
  • vitamins
  • minerals
  • antioxidants
  • supplements
  • individual nutrients

These can provide useful information, but they do not tell the whole story of food.

A person does not eat isolated nutrients.

We eat food.

And food exists within a larger relationship:

nature → food → body → digestion → Life Energy → daily life

Life Energy Diet looks at that whole relationship.

The question is not simply:

“How nutritious is this food?”

We should also ask:

“What does my body need to spend to receive and use this food?”

This is a deeper question because the body itself must use Life Energy to process everything we eat.

The Body Must Spend Life Energy to Process Food

Food does not simply enter the body and automatically become usable Life Energy.

The body must spend its own Life Energy to receive, digest, transform, absorb, use, and eliminate what we eat.

Therefore, eating is not automatically beneficial simply because a food contains nourishment or provides energy.

There is an important relationship between what food contributes and what the body must spend to process it.

How much Life Energy does the body need to spend to process this food, and how much does the food ultimately contribute to the body?

A food may provide nourishment or energy, yet still be inappropriate if processing it places too great a demand on the body.

This can be particularly important when the body is already weak or has limited Life Energy.

Therefore, Life Energy Diet™ asks us to consider not only what food provides, but also what the body must spend to receive it.

The deeper question is:

Is my way of eating giving my body what it needs without unnecessarily draining its Life Energy?

This principle applies not only to food.

It is part of the larger TLE understanding of health:

Every foundation should support Life Energy rather than continually taking more from the body than it can sustain.

Food Can Support Life Energy in Different Ways

Different foods can contribute to the body’s Life Energy in different ways.

Some foods may primarily provide nourishment and energy that the body can use.

Other foods may be particularly helpful in supporting the body’s ability to transform, move, or use energy appropriately.

Therefore, food should not be evaluated only by how much energy it appears to provide.

We should also consider:

How does this food affect the body’s ability to use and move Life Energy?

This connects food directly to the second TLE principle:

Free the Flow of Life Energy.

A food may provide energy but still be inappropriate if it creates too much burden or interferes with the body’s ability to use that energy properly.

Conversely, appropriate food choices can support not only the building of Life Energy but also its appropriate movement and use.

So Life Energy Diet considers both:

building Life Energy

and

supporting the flow of Life Energy.

Know Your Body Before You Decide What to Eat

Life Energy Diet begins with:

Know Your Body.

We need to pay attention to our own condition.

For example:

  • Do we have sufficient energy?
  • Do we digest food comfortably?
  • Do certain foods consistently create problems?
  • Are we too weak or depleted?
  • Are we eating too much or too little?
  • Are we frequently hungry?
  • Are we eating at appropriate times?
  • Are we constantly trying to control our weight?
  • Are we living in a hot, cold, dry, humid, or changing environment?
  • Are we recovering from illness?
  • What does our daily activity require?

These questions help us move away from the idea of a single “perfect diet.”

The goal is not to find the perfect diet for everyone.

The goal is to understand:

What food and eating patterns are appropriate for this body, at this time, under these circumstances?

Your Diet Should Change as Your Body and Circumstances Change

Our bodies are not static.

Throughout life, our condition can change because of:

  • age
  • activity
  • seasons
  • environment
  • work
  • sleep
  • emotional circumstances
  • illness or recovery
  • changes in strength
  • changes in digestion
  • changes in daily responsibilities

Therefore, the way we eat may also need to change.

A diet that was appropriate several years ago may not be appropriate today.

Food that was suitable during one season may not be what the body needs in another.

The amount of food needed during a period of greater activity may differ from what is appropriate during a period of rest.

Someone recovering from illness may have different needs from someone who is strong and healthy.

When the body changes, we should not blindly continue following an old diet simply because it once worked.

Instead:

Observe. Understand. Adjust.

This is part of knowing your body.

Stable Principles, Flexible Application

This distinction is essential to Life Energy Diet™.

The principles of nature do not need to change every time our circumstances change.

What changes is how we apply those principles.

Therefore:

The principles remain stable. The application changes as the body and circumstances change.

Life Energy Diet is neither rigid nor random.

We do not need to abandon fundamental principles every time a new food trend appears.

Nor should we follow exactly the same diet forever without paying attention to our changing body.

Instead, we continually return to the principles, observe the body, understand the circumstances, and make appropriate adjustments.

Life Energy Diet Is Not a Trend Diet

A trend diet often begins with a particular idea:

Eat this way.

Or:

Avoid these foods.

Or:

Eat more of this nutrient.

Or:

Follow this formula to lose weight.

Life Energy Diet begins somewhere different.

It begins with:

Understand nature. Understand your body. Understand your food.

Then apply the principles appropriately.

This means Life Energy Diet can remain relevant even when food trends change.

The principles remain.

The application can be adjusted.

The Purpose of Food in Life Energy Diet

Food has important roles in the body.

It provides nourishment.

It supports the body’s activities.

It provides materials needed to maintain the body.

It can support the cultivation of Life Energy.

It can also influence how the body uses and maintains its energy.

Therefore, food should be viewed as part of the body’s overall energy economy.

A useful question is:

Is my way of eating giving my body what it needs without unnecessarily draining its Life Energy?

This question brings together both sides of the relationship:

what the body receives

and

what the body must spend.

Build Life Energy Through Food

The first TLE principle is:

BUILD LIFE ENERGY

Food can help build Life Energy when the Life Energy and nourishment gained from it appropriately outweigh the Life Energy required by the body to process it.

This does not necessarily mean eating more.

It means eating appropriately.

Appropriate food, appropriate amounts, appropriate preparation, and appropriate timing can all matter.

The goal is to provide nourishment that the body can receive and use without unnecessary depletion.

But what is appropriate may change.

As the body changes, its needs may change.

As the seasons change, our food choices may need to change.

As activity changes, the amount and type of food may need to change.

Therefore, building Life Energy through food requires both stable principles and attentive observation.

Free the Flow of Life Energy Through Food

Life Energy Diet also follows the second principle:

FREE THE FLOW OF LIFE ENERGY

Having Life Energy is not enough.

It must also be able to move and function appropriately.

Food can influence this process.

Food that is difficult for an individual to digest may create unnecessary burden.

Eating excessively may create another burden.

Eating at inappropriate times may interfere with the body’s natural rhythms.

Some foods may primarily contribute nourishment, while others may have a greater role in supporting the body’s ability to move and use energy.

Therefore, Life Energy Diet considers both:

what we eat

and

how we eat.

Sustain Life Energy Through Food

The third principle is:

SUSTAIN BOTH

A diet should not merely create short-term improvement.

It should support health over the long term.

But sustainability does not mean following exactly the same menu forever.

Life changes.

The body changes.

The seasons change.

Living circumstances change.

Therefore, sustainable eating means being able to adapt while remaining faithful to the fundamental principles.

The goal is:

A way of eating that can continue to support Life Energy throughout life, while adapting appropriately as our needs change.

The Three Principles Apply to Life Energy Diet

The relationship can be summarized simply:

Life Energy Diet™BuildFreeSustain
Food
Amount
Timing
Preparation
Eating habits
Individual adaptation

The three principles are not three separate stages.

They operate together.

And Life Energy Diet is not the only foundation that does this.

Know Your Body Comes First

There is an important distinction in the TLE framework.

Know Your Body is not exclusive to Life Energy Diet or Life Energy Exercise.

It is the starting point for applying Total Life Energy to every action in daily life.

Before eating, know your body.

Before exercising, know your body.

Before resting, know your body.

Before choosing a daily activity, know your body.

Before deciding how much to do, how strongly to do it, or when to do it, know your body.

Therefore:

Know Your Body is the foundation for applying all three principles to all three foundations.

The Three Foundations of Total Life Energy

Total Life Energy has three foundations:

Life Energy Diet™

Know Your Food.

Life Energy Exercise™

Know Your Practice.

Life Energy Living™

Know Your Daily Ritual.

Together, they address the major areas of everyday life.

But all three begin with:

Know Your Body.

And all three apply the same three principles:

Build Life Energy.

Free Its Flow.

Sustain Both.

Why All Three Foundations Are Necessary

The human body is not divided into three independent parts called food, exercise, and lifestyle.

Everything is connected.

Food affects the body.

Movement affects the body.

Sleep affects the body.

Emotions affect the body.

Environment affects the body.

Daily habits affect the body.

These influences interact.

Therefore, complete health cannot depend on only one foundation.

Life Energy Diet™

supports health through food and nourishment.

Life Energy Exercise™

supports health through appropriate movement and Life Energy practices.

Life Energy Living™

supports health through the way we organize and live our daily lives.

All three are necessary.

No One Foundation Should Take Life Energy Away

If one part of life supports the body while another continually depletes it, the overall result may still be poor.

Someone may eat carefully but exercise excessively.

Someone may exercise appropriately but repeatedly sacrifice sleep.

Someone may eat well and exercise but live under continual emotional strain.

Someone may have a healthy daily routine but eat foods inappropriate for their individual condition.

Therefore, we cannot look at one part of life and ignore the rest.

Every foundation should support Life Energy rather than continually taking more from the body than it can sustain.

This is why TLE is a complete system.

Why Food Must Be Considered With the Whole Life

Food does not exist separately from the rest of life.

The effects of food are connected to:

  • sleep
  • movement
  • work
  • emotions
  • environment
  • seasons
  • daily rhythm
  • age
  • health condition
  • activity level

A person’s food needs may therefore change when these conditions change.

For example, a person may eat differently during a period of intense physical activity than during a period of rest.

A person may need to make different choices during recovery from illness than when fully healthy.

Seasonal and environmental changes may also influence what is appropriate.

This is why Life Energy Diet must be understood within Life Energy Living.

Why Grains Have an Important Place

One important difference between Life Energy Diet and many modern diet trends is the understanding of staple foods.

Grains such as:

  • rice
  • wheat
  • millet

have been important foods for human societies throughout history.

They are not merely foods to be eliminated whenever a new dietary trend appears.

For many people, grains can be an important regular part of daily nourishment.

The question is not simply:

“Are grains good or bad?”

The better questions are:

Which grains?

In what form?

Prepared how?

In what amount?

At what time?

For which individual?

Under what circumstances?

This is the type of thinking Life Energy Diet teaches.

Eating According to Nature

Nature has rhythms.

There are seasons.

There are changes in temperature and humidity.

There are periods of activity and rest.

There is day and night.

Human beings live within these natural cycles.

Food is part of this relationship.

The way we eat should therefore not be completely disconnected from the environment in which we live.

Seasonal changes can influence the body.

Climate can influence the body.

Daily activity can influence food needs.

Age and life circumstances can influence food needs.

Therefore:

Know Your Food means understanding food in relationship to nature, your body, and your life.

Food and the Seasons

Different seasons create different living conditions.

Summer may bring heat and humidity.

Winter may bring cold and dryness.

Spring and autumn bring their own transitions.

These environmental changes can influence how the body functions.

Traditional food practices developed in many cultures through long observation of these relationships.

TLE draws from the long traditions of Daoism and Traditional Chinese Medicine while applying their principles to individual life.

The goal is not to imitate an ancient menu.

The goal is to understand the principles behind the relationship between:

food → body → environment → season → Life Energy

and then apply those principles appropriately to current conditions.

Food and Individual Differences

Two people can eat the same meal and experience different results.

The same person can also respond differently to the same food at different times in life.

Why?

Because they are different bodies, and because bodies change.

They may have different:

  • constitutions
  • energy levels
  • digestive abilities
  • ages
  • activity levels
  • living environments
  • seasonal conditions
  • health challenges
  • daily demands

Therefore, Life Energy Diet™ is individualized and dynamic.

It is not:

“Find your diet once and follow it forever.”

It is:

“Understand your body, observe its changing needs, and adjust your diet accordingly.”

The Body Is Not a Machine With One Standard Fuel

A machine may be designed for a particular fuel.

Human beings are living organisms.

Our bodies continuously respond to:

  • food
  • temperature
  • activity
  • rest
  • emotions
  • environment
  • time
  • age
  • circumstances

We therefore need to observe and understand the body rather than treating it as a standardized machine.

This is why TLE teaches:

Know Your Body. Know Your Food.

And because the body changes, knowing your body is not something you do only once.

It is an ongoing practice.

Eating Should Not Become Another Source of Fear

Modern health information can make food confusing.

One year, a food is considered healthy.

Another year, it is considered unhealthy.

One diet says to eliminate something.

Another says it is essential.

One expert emphasizes restriction.

Another emphasizes supplementation.

This constant conflict can make people afraid of food.

Life Energy Diet takes a different approach.

Instead of continually chasing food trends, learn the underlying principles.

Then learn how to observe your own body.

When your body or circumstances change, make appropriate adjustments.

The goal is:

Understanding—not fear.

Food and Weight

Weight management is also part of Life Energy Diet, but it is not the foundation of the diet.

Weight is one aspect of health.

A person can lose weight and still be weak.

A person can be at a socially “ideal” weight and still have poor health.

Therefore, TLE does not define successful eating simply as achieving a particular number on a scale.

The deeper goal is to support the body so that it can regulate itself appropriately.

This includes supporting:

  • energy
  • digestion
  • activity
  • recovery
  • healthy body function, including appropriate regulation of body weight
  • long-term vitality

The goal is not to fight the body indefinitely.

It is to support the body so that it can increasingly regulate its functions appropriately.

And as the body’s condition changes, the approach to food may need to change as well.

Food Should Support Life, Not Dominate Life

Eating is supposed to support living.

Food should give us nourishment for our lives.

It should not become our entire life.

Constant calorie counting, food fear, extreme restriction, endless dieting, and continually changing food rules can themselves become burdens.

Life Energy Diet seeks a more sustainable relationship with food.

Learn.

Observe.

Adjust when needed.

Practice.

Then live.

The Difference Between Knowing Food and Following Food Rules

Following a rule is easy:

“Never eat this.”

Or:

“Always eat that.”

But knowing your food is deeper.

It means understanding:

  • where food comes from
  • how it relates to nature
  • how it is prepared
  • how your body receives it
  • how much you need
  • when you need it
  • how your circumstances affect your needs
  • when your needs have changed

This is why Know Your Food is one of the Three Pillars of Health.

Food Is Part of Daily Life

We eat every day.

Therefore, food is not a treatment that we occasionally apply.

It is part of our daily environment.

Every meal is an opportunity to either support or challenge the body’s Life Energy.

And because meals happen repeatedly, small patterns can become significant over time.

This is why the principles apply directly:

Build Life Energy.

Free Its Flow.

Sustain Both.

But the way we apply these principles may change as life changes.

Life Energy Diet and Self-Healing

The body has its own ability to regulate, adapt, repair, and maintain itself.

Food does not “heal” the body in isolation.

Rather, appropriate nourishment can help create conditions in which the body can better perform its natural functions.

This distinction is important.

Life Energy Diet does not ask:

“What food cures this disease?”

It asks:

“How can I support my body’s Life Energy and natural ability to maintain health?”

This shifts attention from chasing a particular food for a particular illness toward understanding the body as a whole.

The Long-Term Test: Can Your Diet Adapt?

A truly sustainable diet must do more than work under one set of circumstances.

Life changes.

The body changes.

The seasons change.

Living conditions change.

Therefore, a sustainable way of eating must be capable of adapting.

The question is not only:

“Can I live this way for life?”

It is also:

“Can I adjust this way of eating as my body and circumstances change?”

This is a deeper definition of sustainability.

The goal is not to constantly change diets.

The goal is to:

Maintain the principles while making appropriate adjustments when conditions change.

Learning Once, Benefits for Life

One of the promises of Total Life Energy is:

Learning Once. Benefits for Life.

This does not mean following exactly the same diet for the rest of your life.

It means learning the principles that allow you to understand food and adjust your choices throughout life.

Once you understand the principles, you can apply them to:

  • different foods
  • different seasons
  • different environments
  • different stages of life
  • different activity levels
  • changing bodily conditions

You do not need to memorize an endless list of rules.

You learn how to think.

You learn how to observe.

You learn how to adjust.

And you become increasingly capable of caring for yourself.

The principles remain. Your application can change.

Life Energy Diet Is a Way of Thinking About Food

At its deepest level, Life Energy Diet is not simply a menu.

It is a framework.

It asks us to look at:

Nature

Food

Body

Life Energy

Daily Life

Changing Circumstances

Long-Term Health

This is why Life Energy Diet belongs within the larger Total Life Energy system.

The Three Questions of Life Energy Diet™

Whenever you eat, plan a meal, change your diet, or encounter a new food trend, return to these three questions:

1. Does this help Build Life Energy?

2. Does this help Free the Flow of Life Energy?

3. Can it Sustain Both?

These three questions should always be considered in relation to your body and your current circumstances.

What helps build Life Energy for one person may not be appropriate for another.

What supports the flow of Life Energy under one set of circumstances may not be appropriate under another.

And what can sustain Life Energy over the long term may need to change as the body, environment, season, activity, age, or other circumstances change.

Therefore:

Know Your Body is not a fourth principle. It is the foundation for applying all three principles appropriately.

The three principles remain:

Build. Free. Sustain.

Observe. Understand. Adjust.

Life Energy Diet does not ask us to constantly change our diet.

It asks us to pay attention.

When the body changes, observe.

When circumstances change, understand.

When the current approach is no longer appropriate, adjust.

Then observe again.

Observe. Understand. Adjust.

This is how stable principles can guide a changing life.

From Knowing Your Food to Living Your Health

We began this foundational journey with the universe and nature.

We then explored:

Life Energy.

Health.

Healing.

The Natural Rules of Life.

The Human Body in Nature.

The Individual Body.

Daily Life.

And then:

The Three Principles of Total Life Energy™.

Now we are applying those principles to the three foundations of health.

The first is:

Life Energy Diet™

Know Your Food.

Food is not simply something we consume.

It is part of our relationship with nature.

It is part of our relationship with our body.

It is part of our Life Energy.

And it is part of the way we live every day.

Because our bodies and circumstances change, learning to eat well is not about finding one perfect diet and following it forever.

It is about learning principles that allow us to make appropriate choices throughout life.

The TLE Perspective

Life Energy Diet does not ask us to chase the newest diet.

It asks us to return to fundamental principles.

Understand nature.

Understand your body.

Understand your food.

Observe your changing conditions.

Adjust when appropriate.

Then make choices that:

Build Life Energy.

Free Its Flow.

Sustain Both.

That is the foundation of eating for lasting health.

The Key Principle to Remember

The principles of Life Energy Diet™ remain stable, but their application should change appropriately as your body, environment, season, activity, and life circumstances change.

This is what makes Life Energy Diet neither rigid nor trend-driven.

It gives you something more valuable than a temporary diet:

A way to understand food for life.

Next: Article 11 — Life Energy Exercise™

If food helps provide nourishment for life, the next question naturally follows:

How should we move, exercise, and practice so that movement supports rather than depletes Life Energy?

That leads to the second foundation:

Life Energy Exercise™

Know Your Practice.
